Modal sells serverless GPU and sandbox infrastructure. On October 14, 2026 CEO Erik Bernhardsson wrote that Modal crossed $1 billion in annualized run rate and raised a $750 million Series D at a $15.75 billion post-money valuation led by Accel. He said Sandboxes alone are a $300 million run-rate product. In May 2026 the company said it raised $355 million at a $4.65 billion valuation after surpassing $300 million in annualized revenue. Reuters reported those May figures from the CEO. No gross margin was found.

| Dimension | Score (1–5) | Notes & sources |
|---|---|---|
| Real customers & revenue quality Are there named paying customers, recurring revenue, and retention evidence? | 5/5 | Per Modal, annualized run rate crossed $1 billion, and Sandboxes are a $300 million run-rate product. Named users in that post include DoorDash, Cognition, Ramp, Linear, Hebbia, Runway, and others. The May 2026 post said annualized revenue had surpassed $300 million.

| Unit economics Do gross margins survive inference/compute costs? Is pricing durable? | Unknown | Unknown — no public figure found. |
| Moat Proprietary data, distribution, switching costs, or tech that is hard to copy? | 3/5 | Bernhardsson says Modal built its own file system, container runtime, scheduler, and networking across 20-plus clouds, and that it has spun up close to 3 billion sandboxes. That is a real runtime. GPU capacity itself is not exclusive.
|
| Platform risk Could a model provider or incumbent ship this as a feature? (higher score = lower risk) | 3/5 | Modal is an independent cloud runtime. Hyperscalers offer containers, functions, and GPUs. The developer interface and sandbox volume are the defense, not ownership of a model or a network.
|
| Team & execution Shipping cadence, leadership track record, stability. | 4/5 | Erik Bernhardsson signed the September 2025 Series B post, the May 2026 Series C post, and the October 14, 2026 Series D post. Disclosed annualized revenue moved from about $300 million in May to $1 billion in October, per the company.
|
| Funding vs. traction Is capital raised justified by verifiable traction? | 4/5 | Per Modal, the Series D is $750 million at a $15.75 billion post-money valuation against a $1 billion annualized run rate. The Series C was $355 million at $4.65 billion against more than $300 million annualized revenue. The multiple expanded with the reported revenue.
|
| Hype signals Demo-driven marketing, vague metrics, valuation outrunning evidence? (higher score = fewer red flags) | 3/5 | The valuation moved from $1.1 billion in September 2025 to $15.75 billion in October 2026 on company-reported revenue. The latest figure is a company blog post the day before this review, not a filing.
